When someone starts training and learning a sport, his or her talents will be useless without the proper guidance of a good coach. Regardless whether the name is “coach” or “sensei”, as it is in martial arts, the mission is the same. The coach will need to take a rough gem, which is you with your unperfected talents and skills, and polishes you so that your real shine in the sport can be seen. A great coach will make you love the sport, and offer inspiration and motivation to work harder each time, pushing yourself to become better, with each passing day. So what else makes a coach or sensei good? Take a look at the following list.

  • Teach trust and self-appreciation

A coach should never focus only on developing physical abilities because the mental one also weight a lot in the performance of a sportsperson. He will need to help their students believe in themselves, trust their skills and abilities, and help them to have a great self-appreciation. And this is even more important after a failure, teaching them to look at it as another lesson, which will eventually make them stronger and better.

  • Will never use harsh or humiliating teaching methods

Using defamatory expression when it comes to your student or punishing them in a violent manner is not a sign of good coach. Calling a person bad names when he or she is not able to do something right is the wrong type of approach. These people need guidance, not a dictator on their backs. Such methods will never pay off for a long term and will make people hate sport.

  • They know that students are different and focus on the person

When coaching a group of persons, or team, each is unique, even if they work together. They learn differently, behave and react in the same manner, so he will need to have the patience and skills to treat each in a different manner, to be able to reach that person and transmit the right information.

  • They keep their mind open and coaching flexible

Not all people respond in the same manner to the same type of coaching, so the coach or sensei should be prepared to change their tactics to get the best out of his trainees. So he will constantly watch the evolution and response of each of his trainees, to be able to make changing in the training procedure if the situation requires.

  • Will talk to the athlete’s parents and train them as well

This type of training is not the same in the case of the trainee’s parents, meaning more preparation that will help the coach on his mission even when the trainee is not under his supervision. When trying to obtain extraordinary results, parents should also follow the same path the coach is attempting to set, being his allies and not his enemies.

  • Honesty, integrity and dedication characterize a good coach

A good coach will never favor one trainee more in particular, will not take advantage of any of them to gain personal benefits, and will never let any of them down by behaving inappropriately. The coach or sensei should always be an example for his students, teaching them not only the technique of a great sport but also inspiring them to become responsible members of their community.
