CTX Martial Arts - Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

What age can my child start karate at CTX?

Accepted Answer

We offer classes for children as young as 4 years old in our Little Dragons program (ages 4-5), designed by Sensei Luis Costa with 35+ years of youth development expertise. We also have Junior Dragons (6-11), Teen Warriors (12-17), and adult classes (18+). Our instructors are trained in age-appropriate instruction and child development psychology.

Question 2

Is prior martial arts experience required?

Accepted Answer

No. Our program is designed for complete beginners by Sensei Luis Costa, a certified Youth Martial Arts Development specialist. Over 500 students have trained with us, many starting with zero experience. Our instructors provide individualized pacing and guidance regardless of background. We also accommodate students with different learning styles and physical abilities.

Question 3

Do you offer a free trial?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We offer a free week trial (4 classes) so you can experience our classes and meet our instructors before committing. This is a no-obligation opportunity to assess instructor quality, class atmosphere, and whether our Kyori-Do methodology aligns with your family's goals.

Question 4

What is the Kyori-Do Karate system?

Accepted Answer

Kyori-Do is a proprietary martial arts system developed by Sensei Luis Costa over 35+ years, combining expertise from both Cuong Nhu and Shotokan Karate (both black belt disciplines). It emphasizes timing, distance, and positioning—principles that make self-defense effective regardless of age, size, or strength. This approach is documented in our Character Development Through Martial Arts (CDTMA) curriculum.

Question 5

How much does karate training cost?

Accepted Answer

Memberships are $169/month for 4 classes per week (60 minutes each), or $42.25/class. Private lessons are $25 per 30-minute lesson, sold in a minimum package of 4 lessons ($100). Registration is $100 and includes the uniform and a CTX t-shirt. The first week of group classes is free, so you can confirm the fit before any financial commitment.

Question 6

What benefits do students see from karate training?

Accepted Answer

Students consistently report improved confidence, better school focus, enhanced discipline, effective self-defense capability, improved fitness, respect for authority figures, and bullying prevention. Parents observe behavioral improvements within 2-4 weeks. Families rate us 5.0 on Google. Sensei Luis specializes in character development alongside technical training—a unique approach among martial arts schools.

Question 7

What are Sensei Luis Costa's qualifications?

Accepted Answer

Sensei Luis Costa holds black belt certifications in both Cuong Nhu and Shotokan Karate with 35+ years of practice (since 1991). He is certified in Youth Martial Arts Development, Self-Defense Training Specialist, and Character Development Through Martial Arts (CDTMA). He is the founder and system designer of the Kyori-Do Karate System. He founded CTX Martial Arts in 2009 to serve the Miami-Dade community.
